Jess Blak Sip and Sculpt Workshop
Come sculpt the time away with Jess Blak in this hands on workshop. You will hand carve your own ring or pendant designs from wax which will be cast into silver, and returned to you as a finished piece of jewellery.
Duration: 2.5 hrs
Capacity: Classes are limited to 12 persons.
Venue: Practice Studio, 44 Montague Rd South Brisbane
Dates:
Saturday Aug 31 - 2:00pm- 4:30pm
Class Overview
In this class you will learn the basics of designing and sculpting a lost wax cast ring or pendant. You will create your own designs with the use of carving tools, fire and your hands! This is a great way to engage with materials Jess personally uses to make many of her pieces.
Included in the price are two designs weighing up to 1.3 grams (in wax). At the workshop you may add extra pieces to your order at the cost $70 per item plus the weight in silver. You can also add stones to your designs! These can can purchased for $35 – $40. Jess will walk you through this process (please note- no byo stones or materials required).
After the class, your designs will be cast in solid silver, sanded, polished and finished in your chosen style. This is the same treatment Jess gives all her pieces so you are essentially designing your own unique Jess Blak piece. They will be available for collection 3-4 weeks after the class date.
Bring along some inspiration of what you would like to create, this will help Jess guide you towards the best results for you from the experience.

Brand Launch: Rare Candy
This weekend we’re hosting a celebration of - and a chance to shop - artisanal pieces from Rare Candy’s archive.
Rare Candy was a studio practice based in Melbourne that worked within the realms of art and commercial fashion. The label, designed by Rohan Whiteley and Rex Veal, used handmade garments, accessories, jewellery and installations to explore the similarities between craft, couture, and the readymade.
Unexpected materials and processes in their work challenged popular ideas of product value and desirability, framing commercial fashion design within the context of an art practice. Rejecting the seasonality of the fashion industry’s trend-based consumption and its wastefulness, Rare Candy favoured the serendipity of discarded, used or unwanted materials that are readily available.
Hinting at, but also trashing the exclusivity and coveted nature of couture, their method of production employed improvised craft techniques, hand detailing, repairs and alterations, patchwork, prints, natural dyeing and staining processes. These processes revealed an intimacy that can be lost in mass production and reevaluated what can be seen as a desirable commodity. With these garments, Rare Candy has also produced an ongoing series of
collaborative fashion performances that engage with the politics of the body on display.
The label ceased production in late 2016.
Join us after hours on Saturday to be the first to explore Rare Candy’s archive and meet one half of the creative duo, Rohan Whiteley.
Feature Artist: Gemma Traynor
Gemma Traynor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Gemma’s practice has emerged from her two loves of photography and craft. Her practice is centred around introspective reflections of memory and human experience. Traynor’s artworks are shaped by play and build on the idea of the photograph as memory.
For Gemma’s first solo exhibition she has chosen to reflect on her time spent exploring Europe in 2023 by reworking her film photographs into textile wall hangings and soft sculpture.
Please join for opening drinks on the 12th of July.
SAMPLE/SALE
It’s that time of the year again! Drop by to shop designer samples, seconds and sale pieces as we clear out our minds and spaces to make room for new ideas.
Brand Launch: Isabella Charles
This weekend we’re welcoming local designer Isabella Charles to Practice Studio. Fresh from a stint in Berlin, Isabella returns to Brisbane just in time for winter. Bringing with her a range of one-off pieces in her signature palette of monochromatic black and white, expect to see experimental draping with gothic overtones. Isabella’s full range of ready to wear pieces will be in-store this weekend for a pop-up style event in the gallery room before we select a few favourites to keep in-store.
Designer in Residence: Eye Fleur
Claudia Thorp (she/her) otherwise known as Eye Fleur is a Brisbane/Meanjin based ceramicist and art event curator. Claudia hand builds her ceramics from her home studio, sculpting both original conceptual artworks and functional pieces. Eye Fleur has hosted and taken part in numerous exhibitions and events Meanjin wide over the past four years. You can look forward to seeing her work on her newest multimedia collection in the studio, mixing textiles, jewellery and ceramics.
Pop by during store hours to watch Eye Fleur’s takeover of the gallery space take shape and join us on Friday June 7 for a cosy closing night event.
Market: Vintage & Designer Fashion
Hosted by Naught Nu, the Vintage & Designer Fashion Market will bring together the personal collections of some of the studio’s friends and customers. Browse men’s and women’s clothing and - fingers crossed - find something unique to treasure forever.
Designer in Residence: Naught Nu
Throughout the month of May, Practice Studio founder Kat Walsh will be playing in the gallery space and working on designs for her upcoming label Naught Nu. Naught Nu’s first collection will be made entirely from Kat’s current deadstock fabric stash and any trims, threads and notions will be sourced from within the studio’s walls. By buying ‘nothing new’ and limiting the availability of resources, Kat will be challenged to make the most of what already exists; an exercise in creativity guided by sustainable design principles. Drop by to watch as her creative process gradually unfolds, with moodboards covering walls and draped designs evolving on mannequins all month.
Pop Up: Jess Blak
Step into the aesthetically divine world of Jess Blak in April as she takes over the gallery space for an immersive popup experience. Jess will be holding silversmithing workshops and bringing along a selection of exquisitely crafted pieces to shop during a four day event.
“Jess’ style of making emulates textures found in ruins and shipwrecks, inspired by such artefacts and their ability to recall stories lost and the mystery of times past. The treatment of the metal suggests time has manipulated the surface leaving it organic and completely unpredictable, beautifying the unexpected nature of discovery.” - jessblak.com

Feature Artist: Eve Mathies
Welcoming Eve Mathies to the Practice Studio Gallery in April. Eve is a second year fine arts student at QUT with an emerging focus on textiles within her creative practice. Returning often to themes surrounding the feminine experience, fabric manipulation and embroidery become potent and layered modes of communication in her work.
Eve will be exhibiting and working in our gallery space from April 10-21, with her residency culminating in a closing event on Friday, April 19 from 5-8pm.
Caro Toledo: Soul Elevator
In much the same way as fashion can be read a collage of references to moments past and present, local artist Caro Toledo enjoys playfully combining disparate elements to create new narratives. Toledo’s works are both personal and universal in nature and you may be able to find yourself somewhere in the middle of any one of them. Join us for an intimate opening event on Friday December 1 from 5-7pm or pop in during the week to browse this latest body of work.

Art making comes to me in waves, the tides of which are unpredictable, Life and all that.
Whilst making the works for Soul Elevator, feelings of curiosity and happiness
prevailed. I was imagining thoughts and what their physicality might be, they could be a little like these works: loose and seemingly still taking shape, buoyed by the tunes facilitating my mind’s meanderings. Like thoughts, the works are layered, one thing triggering another, another playing off something else. Nothing was ruled out, and that creative freedom was incredibly gratifying, and… elevating.
Collage allows me to transform words and visuals, to extract a new meaning of my doing. I enjoy displacing things, turning them about, cutting up the words of others and tell my own stories. Mind you, I don’t spell things out, no. There’s space for a little mystery, a game of sort. In a way, it’s a collaboration: I do some of the work, you’ll do the rest. And that’s a little magic, don’t you think?

Emily Ebbs: Walk Home
In October we welcome Emily Ebbs to the Practice Studio gallery space.
Emily Ebbs is based and practising on Gadigal land. Her process based work evokes the emotional residue of memories. She focuses on the idea of the stain. The stain shows signs of something marked or discoloured that is difficult to remove where she finds it is closely linked to the idea of past events that shaped us emotionally. Emily is a finalist of the Mosman Art Prize for 2023. She also recently won the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olly Art Centre Nancy Fairfax (AIR) award, 2022. Ebbs also won the Prix Yves Hernot painting award, 2022.
This body of work is a more playful series that explores the simple nostalgic moments of walking home on a sunny day and letting your hand graze along the ornate iron fences. Emily has used her usual stain technique but added a more figurative element of the cast iron fences.

CONSTRUCT/curate Opening Night
We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Torinne Zach to the PS gallery in the second half of April. Torinne’s solo show CONSTRUCT/curate will showcase a series of graphite drawings and collages that explore the constructed images in fashion and beauty editorials. As an artist, photographer and stylist, Torinne’s interest in the relationship between fashion and art finds expression across a variety of disciplines, with each medium nurturing the other. These symbiotic connections are evident in CONSTRUCT/curate and have resulted in a thoughtful and delicate series of works on paper.

Season's End: Pink Manor Decant Club Launch
While the traditional seasonal calendar falls into chaos, and in Brisbane summer never really ends, let us all entertain the idea of an Autumn as a great reason to come and celebrate local artists, makers and curators in the intimate hub of slow fashion, Practice Studio.
This evening will see the launch of Pink Manor Decant Club (https://pinkmanordc.square.site/), a small online samples and decants for creative and expressive perfumes by Billie Stimpson. To celebrate a personal love of compelling smells, PMDC has also arranged curated scent interpretations to the work of a number of special collaborators, including:
-Work and spoken word performance by Naavikaran
-Handcrafted silver jewellery and accessories by Subtle Chains
-Staunchly cute and reflective art from Trashbinn
-Music from the wonderfully introspective Claude
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, capacity will be capped at 10 guests, and so we invite you to come and engage with the work, enjoy a complimentary drink, chat to the creators, and then make space for others to join when you're ready. It would work perfectly around cute dinner plans to be honest, so pick your favourite someones and make it a night! Some works will be available for purchase, as well as the incredible lineup of designer works regularly stocked by Kat at Practice.

Frankensteining Fashion with Max and Kat
Bring some things into the studio and we'll mash them together.
This one is a full day workshop, where you'll get to hang out with QUT design tutor Max and studio founder Kat in a class of 4 and design something new by using pre-existing garments. Raid your wardrobe or an op shop for some things that you think might make sense together (or not) and we'll find a way to create some kind of hybrid monster from them.
Learn how to drape on a mannequin, sew using an industrial machine, repair, darn, paint on fabric... basically anything you can imagine. We'll impart our wisdom and open up your brain to get those creative juices flowing in an intense yet nurturing 6.5 hour session of pure joy.
Lunch and drinks provided in addition to all the scissors, thread, fabric scraps, paint, glue, pins, rope, paper, beads and ribbons you'll need to realise your artistic vision. We can even sew the dang thing up for you - your humble servants for the day.
