Jess Blak Sip and Sculpt Workshop

Come sculpt the time away with Jess Blak in this hands on workshop. You will hand carve your own ring or pendant designs from wax which will be cast into silver, and returned to you as a finished piece of jewellery.

Duration: 2.5 hrs

Capacity: Classes are limited to 12 persons.

Venue: Practice Studio, 44 Montague Rd South Brisbane

Dates:

Saturday Aug 31 - 2:00pm- 4:30pm

Class Overview

In this class you will learn the basics of designing and sculpting a lost wax cast ring or pendant. You will create your own designs with the use of carving tools, fire and your hands! This is a great way to engage with materials Jess personally uses to make many of her pieces.

Included in the price are two designs weighing up to 1.3 grams (in wax). At the workshop you may add extra pieces to your order at the cost $70 per item plus the weight in silver. You can also add stones to your designs! These can can purchased for $35 – $40. Jess will walk you through this process (please note- no byo stones or materials required).

After the class, your designs will be cast in solid silver, sanded, polished and finished in your chosen style. This is the same treatment Jess gives all her pieces so you are essentially designing your own unique Jess Blak piece. They will be available for collection 3-4 weeks after the class date.

Bring along some inspiration of what you would like to create, this will help Jess guide you towards the best results for you from the experience.

Don’t forget your glasses!

Frankensteining Fashion with Max and Kat

Bring some things into the studio and we'll mash them together.

This one is a full day workshop, where you'll get to hang out with QUT design tutor Max and studio founder Kat in a class of 4 and design something new by using pre-existing garments. Raid your wardrobe or an op shop for some things that you think might make sense together (or not) and we'll find a way to create some kind of hybrid monster from them.

Learn how to drape on a mannequin, sew using an industrial machine, repair, darn, paint on fabric... basically anything you can imagine. We'll impart our wisdom and open up your brain to get those creative juices flowing in an intense yet nurturing 6.5 hour session of pure joy.

Lunch and drinks provided in addition to all the scissors, thread, fabric scraps, paint, glue, pins, rope, paper, beads and ribbons you'll need to realise your artistic vision. We can even sew the dang thing up for you - your humble servants for the day.

TICKETS $140 - AVAILABLE VIA EVENTBRITE

Make a Linen Clutch with Kat

Make a Linen Clutch with Kat

Join studio founder Kat as we run through the entire process of making an A6 linen clutch.

From patternmaking to fabric selection, sewing in a zip to getting a professional finish on your seams, this class will be the intro/ refresher you're looking for to enable you to tackle your home-sewing projects with confidence. And at the end of the session you can take home a new thing that you designed and made yourself!

All of the materials you'll need will be provided and you'll also have access to our studio equipment throughout the afternoon. We'll have a dusty pink and a soft black linen that you can choose from or you can even bring your own fabric and customise the clutch completely. We'll be adding a matching lining, metal zip and wrist handle that you can tuck inside.

All experience levels are invited to join, so while we'll encourage you to brave the process yourself you can also get us to do some of the sewing for you when you get stuck. Watch and learn from each other in this intimate class, limited to 4 people.

Visible Mending with Max

Visible Mending with Max

honouring the history of clothes.

The old pair of jeans that saw you through 10 festivals and an attempt at learning to skateboard has probably seen better days. But don't you kind of love them anyway? Each rip, grass stain, worn out pocket is a little memory! Visible mending is the process of making features out of flaws.

In this 1.5 hour class Max will be running through a range of techniques and showing us some examples of how to keep your favourite pieces in rotation. You'll have access to studio equipment, patches, thread and any fabric scraps that we've got floating around. Just bring yourself and a garment you want to work on (if you've got one). Kat will be hovering around too to offer advice and help you sew things up.

This is not a class that requires technical skill or a perfectionist's level of attention to detail, but if you are that way inclined you can definitely still put your brain to use. Everyone will likely find a way of working that they prefer and come up with something completely different. It's going to be so much fun.
