This weekend we’re hosting a celebration of - and a chance to shop - artisanal pieces from Rare Candy’s archive.

Rare Candy was a studio practice based in Melbourne that worked within the realms of art and commercial fashion. The label, designed by Rohan Whiteley and Rex Veal, used handmade garments, accessories, jewellery and installations to explore the similarities between craft, couture, and the readymade.

Unexpected materials and processes in their work challenged popular ideas of product value and desirability, framing commercial fashion design within the context of an art practice. Rejecting the seasonality of the fashion industry’s trend-based consumption and its wastefulness, Rare Candy favoured the serendipity of discarded, used or unwanted materials that are readily available.

Hinting at, but also trashing the exclusivity and coveted nature of couture, their method of production employed improvised craft techniques, hand detailing, repairs and alterations, patchwork, prints, natural dyeing and staining processes. These processes revealed an intimacy that can be lost in mass production and reevaluated what can be seen as a desirable commodity. With these garments, Rare Candy has also produced an ongoing series of

collaborative fashion performances that engage with the politics of the body on display.

The label ceased production in late 2016.

This weekend we’re welcoming local designer Isabella Charles to Practice Studio. Fresh from a stint in Berlin, Isabella returns to Brisbane just in time for winter. Bringing with her a range of one-off pieces in her signature palette of monochromatic black and white, expect to see experimental draping with gothic overtones. Isabella’s full range of ready to wear pieces will be in-store this weekend for a pop-up style event in the gallery room before we select a few favourites to keep in-store.

Step into the aesthetically divine world of Jess Blak in April as she takes over the gallery space for an immersive popup experience. Jess will be holding silversmithing workshops and bringing along a selection of exquisitely crafted pieces to shop during a four day event.

“Jess’ style of making emulates textures found in ruins and shipwrecks, inspired by such artefacts and their ability to recall stories lost and the mystery of times past. HB Archive is a curation of carefully considered and created garments. It holds the intention to create a well fitting, sustainable and trans-seasonal wardrobe not influenced by current trends.
The website holds a library of clothing and accessories made to order, with a special focus on natural fibres.

The ARCHIVE is made up of pieces that act as building blocks to obtain a capsule wardrobe, with more products being added slowly, including the LIMIT series which includes limited edition end of run designer fabrics, or style variations to ARCHIVE pieces.
